New Legmeer

Green identity

The Legmeer business park, part of the Municipality of Amstelveen, is being transformed into a new, modern, energy-neutral residential area. Together with BplusB and Spark, NEXT architects worked on the Urban Development Plan of Nieuw Legmeer. Living and working are combined with shops, schools, healthcare, leisure activities and catering.

Exploring the existing structures

The structure of Nieuw Legmeer is determined by a clear and powerful framework of public space such as roads, water and green structures. The landscape framework forms the basis of the urban development plan and provides structure for the transformation of the area.

The current industrial estate has a mixed activity and is highly fossilized. The border around the area, however, has a very green character. The green structure on the west and south sides is an ecological connection zone between Het Amsterdamse Bos/de Poel and the Bovenkerkerpolder. This is cherished and maintained.

Connecting the inhabitants with the neighborhood

The new city district is different from other Amstelveen districts; there is a higher housing density and a more urban character. The entire district will ultimately consist of 4,400 homes and 33,000 square meters of businesses, facilities and shops.

Located next to a tram line that connects the neighborhood with the surrounding region, the area is being transformed step by step into a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly urban district. And car-free too.

Creating a new, sustainable neighborhood

In addition to the homes for young and old that will be built, there is also plenty of room for blue and green. Three parks provide contiguous larger green areas in the neighborhood. The water system, which consists of canals, is also an important structuring element that is included in the framework. The urban development plan is divided into four ‘ambient areas’, which will give all neighborhoods in the district their own character and identity. The areas together form a recognizable unity. The most important street, Het Carre, is the last landscape element that should ensure recognizability in the district. This way, Nieuw Legmeer becomes an urban but at the same time green neighborhood.
