The Nieuwe Rietwijker

Breeding Ground

Breeding ground; A new cultural center with a theater, various activity rooms, and a large community space on the ground floor. This will be De Nieuwe Rietwijker in Amsterdam-Noord, where art, culture, and community are at the heart of the project. It offers an opportunity for everyone in the neighborhood to meet each other, and through collaboration, idea generation, and development, strengthen the sense of togetherness in the area.

Exploring the cultural needs

The design by NEXT is based on an open structure where connection is key, with a robust framework that is flexible and multifunctional. The architecture links the square and activity spaces, while an urban veranda on the upper floor extends the continuity of the public domain. Shed roofs give the building a distinctive silhouette.

Connecting different disciplines of art

On the 650 m² ground floor of the building, there will be a workshop or activity space, a café, and a cultural hall where concerts and theater performances can take place. The first and second floors will house a creative incubator for artists’ studios. In short, a gathering place with various disciplines and functions that will contribute to cultural and social fulfillment for the users and residents of the neighborhood.

Creating breeding ground

The ground floor of the community cultural center is designed to be easily accessible with an open, welcoming atmosphere and is intended for everyone from Banne-Noord and the surrounding area. Art, culture, and interaction are central here, allowing neighbors to get to know each other. Collaboration, idea exchange, and development will foster a greater sense of unity in the neighborhood. It serves as an important space where residents and visitors can freely create, rehearse, perform, and learn from one another. A breeding ground for both creative amateur and professional artists.
